IYENGAR YOGA
The Iyengar method is named after Shri Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, and offers an up-to-date interpretation of classical yoga that has grown in India for thousands of years. BKS Iyengar has made yoga relevant to modern life and accessible to all, regardless of age and physical or mental conditions.
The method emphasizes a profound and detailed exploration of asanas – yoga poses, breathing techniques – pranayama, and deep relaxation – savasana. Iyengar yoga is known for its methodical and progressive teaching, safety, precision and alignment, all based on the understanding that the body is the first and most accessible tool for self-understanding and transformation. It develops very gradually, and helps the student to progress with confidence and without hurting himself.
BKS Iyengar revolutionized the art of yoga by introducing and incorporating the use of supports such as belts, ropes, wooden gadgets, called “props” to facilitate learning and accommodate safe progress.
